How long is a work permit valid? Can it be renewed?

In Vietnam, a work permit is typically valid for up to 2 years, depending on the duration of the labor contract or service agreement signed with the employer.

Once expired, foreign employees can apply for an extension for up to another 2 years per renewal, provided that the total validity does not exceed the term of the contract or the agreement with the sponsoring company.

Can a foreigner work for multiple companies with one work permit?

No, a work permit in Vietnam is only valid for one specific job position at a sponsoring company. If a foreigner wishes to work for multiple companies, each company must apply for a separate work permit corresponding to the position the foreigner will hold.

If a work permit expires before being renewed, will there be any penalties?

Yes. If a work permit expires and is not renewed in time, the foreign employee will be considered working without a valid permit in Vietnam. This may lead to administrative fines, deportation, and penalties for the employing company as well. Therefore, it’s crucial to initiate the renewal process at least 30 days before the expiration date to avoid work disruption and legal risks.

How long does it take to process a work permit application?

Typically, the processing time for a work permit application in Vietnam takes around 10–15 working days from the date of submission of a complete and valid dossier. However, the duration may vary depending on the local authorities, the completeness of the documents, and whether additional verification is required by the competent agencies.

Can a foreigner with a work permit sponsor family members to come to Vietnam?

Yes. Foreigners who hold a valid work permit in Vietnam can sponsor their spouse and children to enter and stay in the country under a dependent visa (TT) or temporary residence card. However, the required procedures and supporting documents are regulated by the Immigration Department, and the sponsoring employer or individual must assist in completing the application process.
