Step 2: Submit the application online

Step 3: Submit the original documents directly to the immigration authority
After the online application has been accepted and the required fee has been paid, the sponsoring company, Vietnamese family member, or authorized representative submits the original documents to the Immigration Office or the Immigration Department, depending on the authority handling the application.
Step 4: Receive the extended temporary residence card
Once the complete application has been accepted, the immigration authority will process the application and return the result according to the appointment schedule. In practice, the total processing time from online submission, application acceptance, fee payment, submission of original documents, and receipt of the result is usually around 12–14 working days, depending on the status of the application, the receiving authority, and whether any additional documents are required.
Is there a penalty for overstaying a temporary residence card?
According to Article 21 of Decree 282/2025/NĐ‑CP, using a temporary residence card beyond its validity without approval from the competent authority will result in fines as follows:
- Under 16 days: VND 500,000 – 2,000,000
- 16 – 30 days: VND 5,000,000 – 10,000,000
- 30 – 60 days: VND 10,000,000 – 15,000,000
- 60 – 90 days: VND 15,000,000 – 20,000,000
- 90 – 180 days: VND 20,000,000 – 25,000,000
- 180 days to under 1 year: VND 25,000,000 – 30,000,000
- 1 year or more: VND 30,000,000 – 40,000,000
For sponsoring organizations that allow violations to occur, the fine is double the individual penalty. In addition to monetary fines, foreigners who overstay by 16 days or more may also be subject to deportation measures as determined by the competent authorities.
